WELDON
An 88-year-old Halifax County woman was attacked in her home over the weekend.
Helen Sechler was using the telephone inside her Weldon home when someone broke in and beat her, then slashed her throat. Some articles were taken from the house.
She has been taken to Duke University Medical Center for treatment. She remains in critical condition.
Neighbors say Sechler is special to many people in the small town. They expressed shock at the attack.
No arrest has been made and police will not speculate on a possible motive.
